this kitten was discovered outside next to a deceased litter mate with mom nowhere to be found
New Foster Alert!✨ I picked up this tiny boy last night from @andersonanimalshelter. He was discovered outside next to a deceased litter mate with mom nowhere to be found (need I even remind you? SPAY AND NEUTER! TNR! It saves lives and prevents suffering. There are no excuses). His wrinkled skin and lack of fur on his face and limbs indicates that he was born prematurely. He weighed a mere 60 grams when I picked him up (a healthy newborn kitten weighs between 90 and 120 grams), but as of his latest feeding he’s up to 67! Kittens this size have every odd stacked against them…their immune systems are incredibly underdeveloped and there’s a risk that vital organ systems aren’t fully functioning yet. Despite this, we are going to fight! He’s getting diluted formula through a feeding tube every 2 hours, pedialyte, glucose supplements, and probiotics. He’s got a heating disc and a Snuggle Puppy. The good news is that he has remained strong—he resists the feeding tube and isn’t afraid to make himself heard with his “ferocious” roars😉. This is the youngest and smallest kitten I have ever taken in, so if anyone with preemie experience has tips please comment or DM me!! windycityfosters said that 🙂

Unfortunately the little premature kitten I took in on Thursday began to fade last night. I immediately started fading kitten protocol but in the end his body couldn’t keep up anymore. At his size, it’s likely that he just wasn’t developed enough. I was cautiously optimistic about his future, but I knew the reality of his situation was an incredibly low chance of survival. I’m simply grateful that I got the chance to show him what a full belly and a loving hand felt like. Please spay and neuter. Please TNR your local community cats. Don’t let this happen to more kittens. Rest In Peace baby boy.💔
