So here’s what I’ve been up to for the past 24 hours: new temp fosters! Last night I picked up a group of four 3 week olds who came into animal control and needed out by the end of the night. These little ones were covered in fleas…the water dripping off of them was red with flea dirt and after their baths I spent several hours combing fleas out of their fur. The good news? They’re relatively healthy and they eat great. They get to hang out in the incubator.♥️ @windycityfosters said that.

You know I love fostering the orphans, but there is one habit they have that I am not a fan of dealing with: genital suckling

So what is it? A kitten will suck on the genital area of their litter mate as a way to comfort themselves. This is almost exclusively seen in orphans and is an extremely dangerous behavior for both the sucker and the one being sucked on.

Goblin here is a victim of this behavior. I was taking photos of the pumpkin babies this morning when I noticed he was frequently squatting to pee with nothing coming out. I looked him over and he was completely swollen, making it difficult for him to pass urine. I stimulated him and was able to empty his bladder, but he now has to start on antibiotics and be separated from his brother Baby Boo. This happened in just one night.

Had it continued he could have had permanent damage and needed surgical correction. Genital suckling is not to be taken lightly. How to stop it? Separate them for at least a week.

Goblin has had a rough couple of days but one things remains constant: his big appetite!

Two days ago he started on two more antibiotics and a wound cleanser because his infection (cause by being sucked on by a sibling) went from a URI to a tissue infection. Not good. He’s been hanging out in the incubator with supervised visits with the other kittens. Thankfully as of this morning, he looks a lot better and the antibiotics have been doing a good job! I am hoping to reunite him with his litter mates once his antibiotics finish (as long as there is no more sucking going on)!🎃 @windycityfosters said that.
