It’s time to properly introduce you to the girls kitten – kitten Fedora and kitten Beanie.
I’ve been giving them some time and space to settle in. They spend a lot of time snuggling in the cubby, but the Petcube camera has caught them out and about in the wee hours. Beanie is very playful! Fedora is usually just pacing the room looking for a escape route 🤦🏼♀️ #thehatcats @whiskersnpurrs said.
think kitten Beanie wants to be my friend. kitten Fedora… not so much 😩.

They spend all day snuggled in this cubby, but they are very active in the wee hours. The camera records video of them all night. Beanie is mostly playing and Fedora is still pacing the perimeter looking for a way out 🤷🏼♀️ #thehatcats @whiskersnpurrs said.

I finally had an opportunity to interact with Beanie away from Fedora and it made such a difference. She was less tense, more curious. I was able to touch her without her moving away from me, and then she accepted my treats 😍.

It’s human nature to think cats in this situation are better off being together, that they keep eachother company and provide comfort. Which is true, but it also holds them back. Without Fedora growling next to her, Beanie forgot she was supposed to be scared of me and we had a very pleasant interaction. Sometimes the best way to progress socialization is to seperate them and work with them individually @whiskersnpurrs said.

Beanie acting all coy 💕 Did you see my story from last night when she came out of her cubby and played with me?! 😍 @whiskersnpurrs said.
Conversations with Beanie ❤️.

I’m seeing lots of comments suggesting that Beanie and Fedora are Burmese breed – they are not. The hat cats are from a colony of outdoor feral cats at an industrial site. They are domestic shorthair breed; a catch-all name for all non-pedigreed domestic cats. There is tremendous variation in domestic cats due to generations of cross breeding, so you will see coat colours and characteristics of many different breeds represented. @whiskersnpurrs said.

The girls definitely have the rich sable brown colorpoint typical of the Burmese breed, but true purebreds have yellow eyes and a very distinctive rounded face, eyes and ears. They actually look closer to the Tonkinese breed, which is Burmese crossed with Siamese, that have distinctive blue eyes. Again, it’s highly unlikely they are purebreds, but it’s possible that one of their recent ancestors was a Tonkinese. @whiskersnpurrs said.

The takeaway is that you don’t need to buy a purebred to get a gorgeous cat, you can ADOPT one!

Look at this brave girl! Usually when I come in the room she hussles into her safe cubby. She’s definitely starting to trust me 😍 @whiskersnpurrs said.

Beanie and I really enjoy our play time. So much better than me sitting there while she hides in her cubby! Panama is still not interested in engaging and spends most of her day on the top shelf of the climbing wall where she thinks I can’t see her 😆 @whiskersnpurrs said.

Beanie came up to me this morning to say hi. She was within arms reach. Such soft pretty eyes 😍 @whiskersnpurrs said.
Beanie walked up and ate right next to me! 😳 This is such a big step forward in her confidence and trust. I have @gosolutions.petfood to thank – their flavours are apparently irresistible! 🙏🏻 @whiskersnpurrs said.

Beanie always starts off with airplane ears, but when I tell her that she’s a good girl and she can have a meat tube then she comes in for landing 😍 @whiskersnpurrs said.
This morning I put down food for the girls then left the room for a minute. When I came back in Beanie was eating, and she continued her breakfast even as I walked through the room. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s a big deal! It shows she’s starting to trust me and that she doesn’t see me as a threat. She still doesn’t like me touching her though. Baby steps 🤷🏼♀️ @whiskersnpurrs said.
