Good morning from the tinies.

If a cat has 9 lives, Kanga has already used up 2 of them. She was crashing again last night. Foster Dad helped with giving her fluids and me with moral support. Again, she came out of it but to me she doesn’t look as perky. Still only eats via the feeding tube.
Please know that she has been checked out by the veterinary team, she is on medications, tests have been run, and she is closely monitored. @kitten_faces said.

Update on Kanga-
This girl is hanging in there. I’d like to take this opportunity to explain some things as I’m getting a lot of questions asking what is wrong with her and most importantly, why?

There is no definitive answer.

What we know- the kittens were born outside.

What we don’t know- how healthy was the mom? Was this her first litter this year? It could well be her second and if that’s the case, this litter would be born at a disadvantage because mom just had less to give them.
They only had the advantage of mother’s milk and natural antibodies for just a few days before mom was killed by a car.
In the outside environment, kittens are exposed to all sorts of bacteria and parasites. In addition, mom cats pass parasites to their kittens during birth and often it takes a few weeks for the parasites to take hold and begin wreaking havoc on their immature bodies.

Kanga could also be suffering from some type of virus. There are really so many things that can make kittens ill.

So what we do is rule out what we can, medicate what we think is an issue, and offer supportive care which includes regular fluids given just under the skin to keep her hydrated, feeding high quality kitten formula (for Kanga who has no appetite we are using a tiny feeding tube), giving vitamin B12 injections, probiotics and prebiotics, and anti-diarrheals.
Keeping her little body warm while this infection ravages her body is important, so she’s in the incubator more than the other kittens. Add onto all of that- love. Just holding, petting and comforting her is so crucial to her little spirit.

I’m grateful for my behind-the-scenes husband, who helps with the poking and prodding parts of kitten care. He helps me with tube feeding.
The shelter staff respects that I will “know” when Kanga has had enough. We will not let her suffer. But we are not willing to give up the fight just yet. @kitten_faces said.

Big day for the tinies. We have added a tiny litter box. Nail trims are on the schedule, and a move into a larger playpen. @kitten_faces said.

Usually I don’t start kittens on solid food until 4 weeks of age or older. But then usually I haven’t tube fed a kitten every single feeding for this long either.

So I opened up a pouch of TikiCat Velvet Mousse for kittens in the salmon flavor and squeezed some onto a plate. Kanga ate a tiny bit! I think my heart was doing cartwheels!

Those tiny bites were all she wanted, but we’re celebrating small victories.

So this happened just now. 😺

Plopped some wet food onto a plate while I made my coffee. All 4 tinies were “all in”.
Plus we have 4 babies using the litter box.
I needed this today. Lately I’ve begun to feel unwell. Our veterinarian is getting the most recent poop pictures sent to her and is doing some investigating. We are all stumped as to the “why”, but hope to get some answers. Thank you for all your well wishes, prayers, and Starbucks gift cards. ❤️❤️❤️ @kitten_faces said.

Some may see Kanga and think, what a mess! I say, what a miracle.
This girl still won’t take a bottle but that’s okay; she now finally has an appetite and I can mix her formula into her wet kitten food.

The Magic Spoon 🥄 and I are feeding her TikiCat Baby Thrive and she ate 2 entire packets!
I’m headed to get a celebratory iced coffee drink. 😁 @kitten_faces said.
